A brief history of the 61 years of the Frankston Archery Club.
By Pat Wright (Life member AV)
In 1964, just after we moved to Mt Eliza, Hans Wright (Life Member/ Coach Level 3) heard of some young men shooting at a broken piece of stramit as a target in a park in Karingal. Max Hayes, the three Keep brothers and Peter McBeth.
He went to find them and suggested that they start an Archery Club.
The Bowmen of Frankston was born. All club meetings were held at our house as the club began to grow.
The Frankston Council allowed them to shoot on an empty block on Wells Road, Frankston, opposite the railway line and a neighbour allowed them to store the few targets in their garage.
(Hans trained for his first World Championship at this ground). The land was soon needed for houses and the Council organised a ground for them in Rosedale Grove, Frankston Sth.
This was a great ground with a field course on the side.
Moorabbin Archery Club was getting their new brick club house and donated their old weather board one to the club. It was cut in half for removal, when a rain storm ruined it and the removal company replaced it with the aluminum clad beach house they were moving.
The club was at Rosedale Grove for over 20 years until the area became a flora and fauna reserve and the clubhouse was relocated to Baxter Park in 1986.
The Council leveled the hill we and had a very good field course in the trees but the use of that was cancelled due vandalism and maybe public safety if walkers used it.
At that time we had at least 12 permanent butts at 90 meters until the ruling from Archery Australia stated that all clubs had to have a single shooting line for safety reasons.
In 2004, due to the resignation of a committee member and the address for notification from Consumer Affairs not being changed , the registration of the name of the club had lapsed.
To rectify this, the then President of AV Mr Doug Devlin suggested that the fees be paid and the name changed for the best outcome. So the club became the Frankston Archery Club.
During the years that Hans was State, National, World Championship, Olympic Coach and also a top shooter, the club hosted many archers from all over Australia and Overseas.
Our international visitors were from The USA, The Netherlands, Germany, Switzerland, Canada. UK, Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore and a team from mainland China. Top State and Interstate archers came for coaching .
Hans had a very supportive team from the club who also helped with the running of coaching camps, seminars and coaching for both seniors and juniors and welcoming our visitors whether for coaching or just socialising.
The club also ran some State tournaments at the club, Cerberus and Baxter Park.
The club has and had many great members who have given so much to the club. Whether reaching the "Elite "status, competing or just getting pleasure from shooting socially, there has been support for all.
Many of our members over the years have reached the level of State or National champion in both Seniors and juniors and have also represented Australia Internationally at World Championship and the Olympics.
The club house is still the same as it has always been (minus some walls ) all those years and hopefully in the near future, a new club house and updated grounds will be approved by the council in their plans for Baxter Park.
The volunteers of the club have worked hard to raise the funds, so that when this does happen the club will be able to contribute to this venture for the benefit of all.
